There was already some corrosion on both the old plug and the hole it came out of. If you look closely at the third picture, you'll see where I was cleaning up the hole to prepare for the new expansion plug. I removed the starter for ease of access. Napa had the replacement 30mm plug in stock. I couldn't get the block plug out, so I removed an expansion plug from behind the starter. This is why everything corrodes and rusts when exposed to water. Water in itself is a very 'hungry' chemical. You can open the radiator cap at full operating temp with Evans with no risk of a steam explosion in your face. It helps raise the boiling temp a few degrees. Get rid of the steam, you get rid of the pressure. This is why your cooling system builds pressure. When steam is created in the cooling system, it creates pressure. But that's when it starts to get dangerous. Any operator will tell you that a diesel gets smoother when it's 'hot'. In fact engines are much more efficient at higher operating temps. If water didn't boil at this lower temp, we would use a higher engine temp as the normal. This is what cracks heads, cylinders, and destroys a head gasket. The local areas of higher temp vs the area right next to it which has water in contact cause a lot of local stress. When an engine overheats, it's because steam pockets are created in the head. Steam doesn't conduct heat as well as water. The engine can handle much higher temps, but the water boils and creates steam. Water is the central reason cooling systems have these inherent issues. ![]() It supposedly doesn't wear out or need replacement. Boiling point is 375*, way higher than water.Ħ.
